THE MAIN ISSUE:

CAN A BOOK BE INSPIRED OR EVEN MORE
UNLESS THE BODY THAT HAS CODIFIED IT HAS BEEN INSPIRED? THE
ORTHODOX CHURCH NOT ONLY WROTE THE NEW TESTAMENT;
AT THE END OF THE
FOURTH CENTURY, SHE FINALLY
DECIDED WHICH BOOKS SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN
THE NEW TESTAMENT AND WHICH SHOULD
NOT BE INCLUDED IN IT
WHEN
NON-ORTHODOX PEOPLE SAY THAT SCRIPTURE IS INFALLIBLE
AND WE ASK HOW THIS CAN BE KNOWN, SEVERAL ANSWERS ARE
POSSIBLE:
1.
THE OBSERVER IS INFALLIBLE IN RECOGNIZING WHAT IS SO;
2. THE BODY THAT CODIFIED THE BIBLE IS INFALLIBLE.
IN
TRUTH, ONE CAN MORE REASONABLY SPEAK OF THE INSPIRATION OF INTERPRETATIONS
RATHER THAN OF THE BIBLE ITSELF; BUT SINCE
INTERPRETATIONS ARE TRUE IN SOME
AXIOMATIC PARADIGMS AND
NOT TRUE IN OTHER AXIOMATIC PARADIGMS, IT ALL BOILS DOWN
THE QUESTION OF WHICH PARADIGM IS ACCEPTED.
BUT
SINCE A PARADIGM IS NEITHER TRUE NOR FALSE,
THE ONLY HONEST AND OBJECTION QUESTIONS ARE:
WHICH
PARADIGMS DOES THE AVAILABLE EVIDENCE MAKE POSSIBLE OR
LIKELY--AND IMPOSSIBLE OR UNLIKELY—FOR A SPEAKER OF GREEK AT
THE TIME OF PHILO, CHRIST, ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE, AND ST. PAUL—
TO WHICH SOME WOULD ADD ST. IGNATIOS, JUSTIN MARTYR AND
PLOTINOS, BUT NOT CLEMENT, ORIGEN, OR TERTULLIAN?
