My car's bumper sticker says: "Have you hugged your Dalmatian today?"
Below is modest Matey on "his" easy chair and also when he thought it
was fashionable to keep his left ear turned back. You cannot see it
here but he has those designer ears that few Dalamatians have!!

Matey is right-pawed; not only does he use his right foot for this and that; he is
also right-sided, preferring to be scratched on his right side and to lie on it.

Contrary to a chart in some Veterinarians' offices,
Dalmatians are both hounds and working dogs.
In Britain, they are called coach hounds
because they used to run along beside
stage coaches to keep the boogie
wo/man (robbers, etc.) off!

The picture above was taken ten minutes before Matey was put to sleep. He had worsened by the time I got him to Dr. Oshiro's; she agrerd that his time had come. I was given 30 mins. to say good-bye and then he, still totally quite calm, laid his head on my leg as was sitting on the floor, his head cupped in my hand; he didn't seem disturbed by the injections, but took everything calmly as mere routine. When his eyes closed, I laid him down and removed his collar and dog tags to hand on a nail in my bedroom with pictures of him. When I had to got to an office in town forty minutes later, they observed that my eyes were (still) red. My neighbors think that the shiny black marble grave stone is very beautiful, as do I. By a strange coincidence, it was delivered the day after his death.

Since it was hard for me to do this, and the doctor was not sure his time had come--after he could no longer get up on our bed the last five days--I kept on postponing it to be sure and slept with him on rugs in the library.
I LEARNED AN IMPORTANT LESSON:

When I asked him on his tenth birthday what he had learned in life, his
immediate response was, "Not all that crinkles contains dog goodies."

Matey never didn't pay attention to what was going on!

What is almost miraculous for humans but humdrum for a dog
is to be always loving, always attached, and ever attentive.
